Make your reliability evident

After Kent Robbins joined Hexos as Chief Operating Officer one year ago, company revenues have grown by a staggering 311%. Kent leads a small start-up called Hexos that manages the global maintenance payments of its clients’ Intellectual Property portfolios. While IP renewals and annuities may sound like a niche industry on the surface, this service generates billions in annual revenue. Founded in 2020 by IP attorney Edward Murgitroyd, Hexos was created to offer a more affordable and (more importantly) a more reliable renewals option. Two years later, they had begun operations and secured a handful of faithful clients but like many startups were struggling to gain market share. Hexos turned to Kent, appointing him as COO in November of 2022 and he immediately got to work.

He dissolved Hexos as an LLC, incorporating it in January 2023; he brought with him a network of vetted, talented partners to deepen the Hexos “bench”; he simplified Hexos’ pricing model; and he jumpstarted the then-stagnating development of Hexos’ proprietary software platform.

Most notably, Kent made Hexos’ practice of independently validating their client’s portfolio data — a disruptor concept within the IP renewals space — the central focus of Hexos’s sales, service, and marketing strategy.

Bolstered by his bevy of prior experience and his personal mission "to establish Hexos IP as the undisputed leader and the most coveted employer in the dynamic realm of IP renewals,” Kent was uniquely prepared to make the dramatic changes necessary at Hexos. A former Vice President of Business Development & Strategic Partnerships at Murgitroyd IP (where Kent and Ed first worked together), Kent himself is a veteran of the IP legal industry having served both domestic and international companies and law firms. Prior to his six-and-a-half-year tenure at Murgitroyd IP, Kent helped revitalize DocuLynx, a struggling information management, governance, and digital conversion company — growing its business by tripling revenues, eliminating bad debt and efficiently re-allocating costs ultimately selling his ownership stake in less than three years. A passionate leader with an insatiable Business Development drive, Kent credits his father (a Sales and Branch Manager in the heavy construction equipment space) for instilling his desire to build relationships that extend beyond the Boardroom. Kent’s resume also boasts stints at ADP, Gardner Denver, and even a brief season as an independent consultant. Currently, Kent is an MBA candidate at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.

Regardless of his many career accomplishments, Kent takes the most pride in his commitment to servant leadership. From Senior Vice President to Marine Corps Captain to youth soccer coach, he has built a reputation for making himself available to his team members and offering any, all, and even more support than they could need. As one of his colleagues puts it, “Kent cares deeply about his teammates and how he can help maximize their success and growth opportunities. He exhibits a rare degree of willingness and interest in helping to connect and assist others.” He's formally and informally mentored countless managers and executives and his success as a teacher is evidenced not only by his mentees’ achievements, but also by the frequent social invitations Kent receives from those he’s taken under his wing — whether they be weddings, vacations, or (Kent’s favorite) golf trips. By his own account, he's “humbled and honored to refer so many of his current and former colleagues as friends or even family.”

Kent has brought this infectious attitude of servant leadership to Hexos where he views every member of Hexos a part of its business development growth family regardless of job title. Per one of his direct reports, “Kent is a natural leader and brings an intensity that motivates his team in a non-threatening way (or in a way that doesn't feel like pressure). He is a master motivator.” Whether on calls with prospective clients or when servicing Hexos partners, he’s quick to include all-hands — be it Ed, or Hexos' Director of Operations Stephanie Nelson or often Hexos' Strategic Marketing Executive Joshua Stackhouse — he ensures that his teams not only serve but also build deeper, face-to-face connections throughout the Hexos experience. With Kent’s guidance as a mentor and decision-maker, Hexos has seen tremendous success. Having accrued a plethora of new clients while maintaining the satisfaction of existing clients, there's little doubt that his leadership legacy continues to grow.
